B i o g r a p h y

Southern California native Elvin Schlanger is a graduate of the Yale School of Music where he received his Master of Music studying with Ransom Wilson. Previously, he graduated from California State University, Long Beach with his Bachelor of Music where he studied with Dr. John Barcellona. He has since studied with Kate Prestia-Schaub, Cindy Anne Broz, Cynthia Ellis, Diana Morgan. He is currently pursuing his Artist Diploma at the Colburn School where he studies with Jim Walker.

In high school, Elvin was the recipient of the Elsinore High School Wind Ensemble, Most Outstanding Musician award for four consecutive years. He won the Lake Elsinore Rotary Music Competition and then moved on to the district level and won the Rotary District 5330 Music Competition. He was appointed principal flute at several honor bands and received Command Performance ratings at SCSBOA Solo/Ensemble Festivals, both at local and regional levels. He has appeared as a soloist with the Inland Valley Youth Symphony, Southern California Philharmonic, and Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra, the latter of which he performed two seasons as their principal flute and toured Spain.

After auditioning at CSULB he was awarded a full-tuition music scholarship and was placed into their top ensembles in his first year. He later was the principal flute of the Bob Cole Conservatory Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the BCCM University Wind Quintet. He was awarded the 2016 CSULB Music Department Scholarship, the BCCM Bob Cole Scholar of the Month for September 2017, the 2018 Martin Figoten Performing Arts Scholarship, the 2018 CSULB Woodwind Department Outstanding Student Award, and the 2019 Richard Baker Scholarship. At Yale, he was awarded the 2022 Alumni Association Award and was a finalist in the YSM Concerto Competition. He was also awarded the 3rd prize in the 2020 Samnium University International Orchestra Awards.

He has performed in masterclasses with Dr. John Bailey, Denis Bouriakov, Sarah Jackson, Carol Wincenc, Demarre McGill, Jennifer Grim, and Philippe Bernold. He attended the 10th annual Beyond the Masterclass flute festival at the Colburn School and studied with Jim Walker, Diana Morgan, Ben Smolen, and Rose Lombardo, and also attended the 2018 Domaine Forget International Music Festival and studied with Emmanuel Pahud, Jacinthe Forand, and Joanna G'froerer. This summer, he was a fellow at the 75th anniversary season of the Music Acadamy of the West in Santa Barbara where he studied with Jim Walker and Tim Day and performed under conductors such as Hannu Lintu, Stéphane Denève, Daniela Candillari, and Speranza Scappucci. Elvin is a Wm. S. Haynes Young Artist and plays a Haynes Custom Fusion flute.
